Nigeria

In Kano, Nigeria The Prince’s School set out to raise design awareness and develop the design skills of nineteen young artists and craftspeople through a series of workshops.  After the first workshop, the craftspeople, practitioners of many different crafts, including architectural decoration, embroidery, decorative gourds, pottery, leatherwork, calligraphy, whitesmithing, and textiles, formed their own group, meeting monthly to share ideas and support one another.

After completing the workshops, the craftspeople described their work as, more precise, more marketable, more attractive to customers, and newly inspired.  Their work was brought to the UK to form part of The School’s degree show in the summer of 2008.

“The workshops have really affected the way I work and I have now learned to plan, take measurements and make stencils that help to make my work easier and finer when the product is finished.”
Mohammad Bello, Architectural Designer.

“After the workshops I realize that I am now more innovative and my work is really different and special.  I am making more money because where there is better work, there must be better charges.  My materials are the same as they always have been, but the way you construct the design…that is what really makes a cap unique.”
Nura Ali, Cap Designer

“The workshops have been an amazing experience.  They influenced me body and soul.”

Bashir Mohammad Idris,  Painter and Printer
