Kano, Nigeria

In November 2007 two tutors from The Prince’s School visited in Nigeria to implement a project initiated by the British Council in Kano, Nigeria and supported by the British High Commission, Nigeria.  The project, ‘Celebrating the Traditional Visual Arts of Northern Nigeria’, began with a series of workshops for nineteen men and women artists directed by the tutors.  The first workshop focused on the understanding of the language of the traditional visual arts.  The workshop coincided with a visit from HRH The Prince of Wales who was able to speak to the participants about their experience.

Further workshops followed, and participants, who shared the vision of sustaining their tradition for future generations of local artists, have joined forces with a group of academics and other influential members of the community, to form a forum.  This group, called CADDAK—Craft and Design Development Association Kano—meets monthly to share their experiences and offer support to those with similar ideals.

To showcase the work that has grown out of the workshops and resulted from the ongoing efforts of CADDAK, an exhibition was held at the Terra Kulture Gallery in Lagos in February 2008.  The artists have benefited as a result, through an increase in sales and commissions.

The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts is privileged and honoured to be associated with these artists, who, through their ongoing work, ensure that the principles underpinning the traditional arts are remembered, and make it possible for them to be passed on to future generations.
