The growing interest in iconography and its importance in Christian Liturgical Arts has been recognised in this year's degree prizes awarded by The Prince's School of Traditional Arts. The Nikolaos Perrakis1 Prize for Christian Liturgical Arts has been won by student iconographer, Hanna Ward2 for her work on Christ Panokrator and the Virgin and Child.Established with The Prince's School of Traditional Arts3 (PSTA) whose President is HRH The Prince of Wales, the £1,000 prize is an annual award granted to one student at PSTA to recognise exceptional work and talent in the field of traditional Christian arts and craftsmanship. The prize was donated by Athens businessman and devout Christian Nikolaos Perrakis, and the judging panel included Dr Khaled Azzam (Director, PSTA) and Mr Paul Marchant (Director of Education, PSTA).
"There is an ever increasing demand from cathedrals, churches and individuals for new icons and the number of people wanting to learn this sacred art is growing rapidly", says Stelios Kiosses4, Patron of PSTA and psychotherapist in private practice.
"As with the sacred arts of all religions, the icon is one element of the whole liturgical life of the church and is not made to stand in glorious isolation on a wall. Hanna's work has excelled in helping us to see that the icon is part of a whole sacred act of worship and that it is a traditional art which draws on the wisdom of earlier generations but at the same time is fresh and living".
About Nikolaos Perrakis
An Athens businessman and devout Christian, Nikolaos is a passionate supporter of iconography, kindled by his family history and background. His grandfather discovered an icon during the second World War which is now a family treasure and he himself grew up next to an icon painting school in Greece.
About Hanna Ward and her work
Hanna's study of iconography and Orthodox Church painting focussed particularly on church domes. She concentrated her studies on Goyoasa Church in Romania where one of the School's PhD students, Adrian Iurco, is currently painting a fresco commission.
Hanna has researched icon painting under several masters and chose to focus on Christ Panokrator and the Virgin and child for her final project. She studied the sacred geometry and symbolism underlying the icon and church architecture. Hanna believes that when creating contemporary icons it is important to obey liturgical principles, whilst allowing creativity, in order to uphold this very special image of prayer. Hanna will continue to study iconography at the Prince's School as a student on the Icon and Wall Painting Diploma.

About The Prince's School of Traditional Arts
The Prince's School specialises in teaching, researching, and promoting the practice and theory of the arts and crafts of the world's great traditions.
The Postgraduate Education Programme of the Prince's School balances the teaching of practical skills and understanding of symbolic meaning inherent in the forms realised through these skills. Students are able to undertake practical research at the highest educational level through the MA, MPhil and PhD programmes which are validated by The University of Wales.
Although many universities offer the possibility of studying the traditional arts as historical subjects, the fundamental principle of the School is that tradition is continual renewal.
