Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The programme for doctoral studies at The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts offers practising artists, and those who are interested in exploring the symbolism and meaning inherent in the forms and practice of these arts, an opportunity to undertake research at the highest level. Through carefully tailored programmes a wide range of topics are pursued, and doctoral students are able to engage in a more concentrated exploration of their chosen subject.  The degree is undertaken through a tutorial system of study where close contact between student and tutors allows for careful direction at each step along the way.  As needed in the first year of study, students may follow the post-graduate traditional arts courses to lay the ground for further practical and theoretical research.

"The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, having pioneered doctoral degrees for the study and practice of the traditional arts, continues to support them in an academic context, together with their regeneration as living skills. "

The degree of Doctor of Philosophy can be undertaken by one of two methods:

1.   A combination of practical work and research, with written work to record practical and theoretical findings.  The written work will range from 15,000 to 50,000 words as agreed between student and supervisor.

2.   A theory-based research degree awarded after the successful completion of an approved programme of supervised research that constitutes an original contribution to knowledge.  This will comprise approximately 80,000 to 100,000 words as agreed between student and supervisor.

Requirements

Candidates must normally have obtained a relevant under-graduate degree with relevant experience, or a relevant MA qualification.  Applicants whose first language is not English must satisfy the interviewing committee of their ability to express themselves in English well enough to pursue the course.  We reserve the right to require the candidate to study remedial English as a condition of entry.
