Postgraduate Course Modules

The following courses comprise the basic practical and theoretical programme undertaken by all first year MA and MPhil students, as well as PED students and PhD students as agreed. The curriculum is based on the root meaning of the word ‘educate’, that is ‘to draw forth’ or ‘bring out’ latent talent and skills, rather than to implant information. This means that staff and students work closely and discuss actively together.  Through a series of courses students are introduced to the arts of the world’s great traditions. Each course demonstrates the practical skills behind the craft and also the principles that are embodied in the forms themselves and in the process of making. By experiencing the traditional arts as living skills, both tutors and students participate in the regeneration of the universal principles at their heart.

Each year we reassess the different components of the programme to respond to the requirements of the students. This is essential for postgraduate students. We are also developing a flexible structure to the coursework to enable short courses and modules to be taken by part-time students and those wishing to undertake short-term intensive studies.
