The Sacred and Traditional Arts: Principles and Criteria

Through a course of readings, discussion, and presentations, students are given the opportunity to learn and understand the symbolism behind the traditional arts and the meaning inherent in the forms. Seminars focus on the universal principles, which are common to each of the great traditions of the world and are exhibited in various ways through art. In the holidays between the autumn and spring terms of the first year, each student is required to write a short essay on the nature of sacred and traditional art, with reference to a work of art chosen by the student. The opportunity for discussion and investigation during the seminars, and the written work resulting from them, provide essential support for the practical courses.
