Traditional Geometry
2 Feb - 23 Mar 2010
at The Prince's School for Traditional Arts, Charlotte Road, London
In this course a variety of geometric patterns, mainly from the Islamic and Christian traditions, will be examined and constructed. This will involve working with some of the semi regular grids that underlie Islamic patterning as well as looking at the proportional relationships that govern the various symmetries, their relationship via the square and consequently through to the unfolding of the proportional rectangles
There will also be a study of three dimensional geometry via the five 'Platonic' and thirteen 'Archimedean' solids some of which will be constructed with stick models and paper nets. The mathematical relationships that exist between geometry and music will also be examined. No previous musical knowledge is required.
Some previous experience of geometry is needed for this course.
