Oil Painting Materials and Techniques

This course will give students a thorough understanding in the disciplines and skills developed by master painters of the renaissance. Students will be taken step by step through the various disciplines of classical painting techniques; beginning with learning how to make oil paint from natural pigments, students will then be taught how to prepare and stretch a canvas, to prepare an underpainting in grisailles, tonal composition and theory, the history and origin of pigments, colour theory and mixing colour, chiaroscuro, glazing recipes mediums and waxes, painting with a limited palette, coloured glazes and 'overpainting' techniques.
