Traditional Painting with Egg Tempera

10th March - 31st March at The Prince's School for Traditional Arts, Charlotte Road, London
This course introduces students to the preparation of traditional pigments from minerals and earths for use in the making of watercolours and egg tempera. Participants will explore some of the rich symbolism of colour as well as different approaches to creating harmonious palettes: the alchemical colours, the ancient "coloures austerie" palette and the Renaissance palette. After this introduction to pigments and colour harmony, students will be ready to prepare their final painting. They will learn how to apply the layering technique of egg tempera on a gesso panel by copying a chosen head by Piero Della Francesca or another traditional painting.

Participants should bring a small sketch book for colour harmony studies.
