Courtyard Garden, London

After a visit to the gardens of the Alhambra, a North London couple sought to recreate a similar sense of
serenity in their own garden. Working with garden designer Lucy Sommers, they commissioned Michael Gough (MA, 2002) to create a large pebble mosaic surrounding a tree at the centre of the garden. He designed the motif for the mosaic, sourced the stones, and installed it with the help of Delfina Bottesini (MA, 2002). Having seen the garden, Delfina suggested that hand-made tiles be used to surround the pond in keeping with the mosaic design. Working with the help of Richard Henry (MA, 2001), Delfina re-interpreted a design from a traditional Moroccan floor. The geometric design, which used the numbers 11 and 3, was based on the proportion between earth and moon. The tiles were slip-cast and have a gentle convex shape that produces a pleasant “bare-foot” experience. The garden was featured in ‘‘Homes and Gardens’’ in March 2006.
