Stained Glass Windows and Sculptures at St. Mary's Church, Sheffield

St. Mary’s Church commissioned Helen Whitaker (MA, 1998) to produce a major contemporary work, in stained glass and sculpture, that would celebrate the life of the Church and of the City of Sheffield. Helen responded to the brief by exploring the human and the divine through the theme of pilgrimage, represented by two sculpted copper figures and a large, five-light stained glass window. Based on Psalm 84, the sculptures and the window have an intricate three-way relationship. Through geometry, order is brought into the apparent turbulence of the work, and the viewer is encouraged to contemplate his or her own ‘reality’ within the cosmos represented by the stained glass window.
