Methods, Materials and Symbolism in the Pichhvais Painting Tradition of Rajasthan, Published in 2005
Desmond’s book is a record of his doctoral research on the inherent symbolic nature of the craft of Pichhvais painting, as well as a documentation of the technique of this traditional art. In 2006 Desmond founded the Traditional Arts Trust, in India in order to work towards the renewal of the Pichhvais tradition. He hopes to collaborate with The Prince’s School to establish India’s first school of traditional arts. He will work in conjunction with local Mastercraftsmen to create a network of Gurukhuls, centres of traditional teaching, to guide young people in the practice of the traditional arts. The aim is to take steps towards keeping alive the endangered Guru Shishya lineage of knowledge and skills, ensuring they pass on from generation to generation.
