Nelson Project

In 2003 the School was invited to take part in the Whitfield Community Arts Project also known as “the Nelson Project”. The project aimed to build a stronger sense of community coupled with a deeper appreciation of their environment and artistic heritage.
Workshop participants ranged from 5 to 6 year old children up to 16–18 year old young adults and more matured adults. Evening sessions brought in teachers and local artists and members of the community to open community sessions. Each session involved drawing, painting and stenciling inspired by visual material from display boards and slides, including images from nature as well as pictures of some of the finest examples of traditional art.
At the end of the week, all the work from the workshops were combined into two large, mural-sized doorways. The Project culminated with an exhibition at St Mary’s Church in the Lomeshaye area of Nelson where the two portals were exhibited along with other works produced at the workshops. HRH The Prince of Wales was guest of honour at the closing event.
