This short course introduces you to Hüsnühat, the practice of beautiful writing according to the Ottoman tradition. This course is a practical introduction to calligraphy and provides a step-by-step guide to writing the letters in the Nesih/Naskh script.

Begin by learning to prepare traditional tools and materials - cut and prepare a traditional reed pen or qalam. The tutor will then guide you through exercises of writing lines in various thicknesses, and how to hold the pen at the precise angle for writing.

Progress to writing the different letters of the alphabet in their separate and connected forms. Students will also learn to use the proportional system of measurements to create beautiful letters.

Tutor biography

Gulnaz Mahboob

Gulnaz Mahboob is a London based calligrapher and tutor.

She began her classical training in Islamic calligraphy in 2005 in Istanbul with the renowned Turkish grand master, Hasan Çelebi. In 2012 she was awarded the Ijazah in the thuluth and naskh scripts. Having received her Ijazet she became part of a continuum of more than 10 centuries of calligraphic tradition and is thus a transmitter of this living tradition in the UK.

Her background in anthropology offers fresh perspective on what is a dynamic bond that is established between the letters, the student, the master and the repetitive practices.
