Chinese Brush Painting & Calligraphy: Flowers & Birds
|Dates:||29 July 2019 - 2 August 2019|
|Time:||10:30 - 17:30|
|Location:||The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts|
|Tutor:||Kaili Fu, Xuzhuang Li|
This is a two part course covering Chinese brush painting, and calligraphy - two arts which compliment each other in Chinese tradition.
During the first three days of your course, learn the art of brush painting with tutor Kaili Fu.
The course will begin with a introduction to the cultural symbolism of the subject of flower and bird painting.
Learn essential skills for painting flowers and birds in a free hand style. Students will be shown how to prepare materials, including ink and colour. Then learn the correct way to hold your brush, and load the brushes with ink. Learn how to create brush strokes, and washes of colour.
The tutor will demonstrate how an artist attempts to capture the spirit of the subject - lines, leaves, branches, feathers, and so on using line, composition, and colour. Every part of your painting will hold significance, even the blank spaces.
Painting subjects will include lotus with dragonfly, peony with butterfly and wisteria with birds.
Then complete your painting with a meaningful and complimentary calligraphic phrase. Tutor Xuzhuang Li will guide you in learning the key strokes for writing in running/cursive script and the order in which one creates the strokes. He will suggest a number of phrases which will pair beautifully with your chosen painting subject. You will then practice writing these phrases and add them to your painting.
