Introduction to Chinese Brush Painting & Calligraphy
|Dates:||2 March 2020 - 6 March 2020|
|Time:||10:30 - 17:30|
|Location:||The Prince's Foundation School of Traditional Arts|
|Tutor:||Kaili Fu, Xuzhuang Li|
This is a two part course covering Chinese brush painting, and calligraphy - two arts which compliment each other in Chinese tradition.
Spend the first three days with tutor Kaili Fu, and learn to paint Chinese flowers in a free-hand style, beginning with the plum blossom, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum. These plants are considered to have a refined beauty and allow beginners to master key techniques for Chinese brush painting.
The goal of painting these subjects is not to copy from real life, but to give room for contemplation in every action taken by the artist. Students will learn to hold brushes correctly; mix and load ink or colour; paint lines, leaves, branches, petals, blossoms; the different positions and directions of flowers; ink and colour washing.
The tutor will also show students how to capture the spirit of the subject with line, use of ink and colour, and composition.
Then complete your painting with a meaningful and complimentary calligraphic phrase. Tutor Xuzhuang Li will guide you in learning the key strokes for writing in running/cursive script and the order in which one creates the strokes. He will suggest a number of phrases which will pair beautifully with your chosen painting subject. You will then practice writing these phrases and add them to your painting.
By the end of the course, the student will have a completed work encompassing their learning.
This course requires a minimum number of enrolment to run.
