Introduction to Islamic Art

This one-day course will offer participants a practical introduction to the three pillars of Islamic art, namely geometry, calligraphy and Islimi (floral and foliate forms). Tutors from the School will give demonstrations and lead participants through the techniques of constructing a geometric pattern, writing Arabic script, and painting Islimi patterns.
Participants will practice each of the art forms in three different workshops, and will take home a single piece of artwork they have worked on.

Tom Bree is a geometer-artist, teacher and writer. He completed his M.A. at the School in 2003 and has since been researching and teaching in the area of geometry and symbolism. Tom has been teaching on the Open and M.A. programmes since 2008 and also organises his own geometry courses both in the UK and abroad. He is currently undertaking doctoral studies at the School in which he is analysing the underlying geometric design of Wells Cathedral in Somerset.

Mahrukh Bashir, is an artist, designer and educator. She graduated with a distinction from the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts having completed her Master’s degree in Visual and Islamic art.
Mahrukh is inspired by the beauty, color and patterns of nature. Her work focuses on traditional Islamic arts and crafts. Her work has been exhibited locally in the UK and internationally.
She continues to specialise in Manuscript illumination and miniature painting under different masters. She is also currently completing a traditional apprenticeship in Ottoman manuscript illumination.

Soraya Syed trained as a calligrapher in Istanbul, Turkey. Since receiving her authorization in 2005, she has been teaching as well as exhibiting her work in the UK and abroad. She has an academic background in Arabic and the History of Islamic Art. In 2001, Soraya completed her MA at The Prince's School of Traditional Arts. She currently works from her studio in Greater London where she resides with her family.
