An introduction to the practice, methods and materials used by calligraphers in the Islamic calligraphy tradition.
Learn how to prepare a own reed pen and sized paper, practise writing the Arabic alphabet and explore the proportional systems that underlie the letters.
By the end of the course you should have made your own piece, using ink and gold leaf.

All materials will be provided on this course.

This course will take place in the artist's studio at:

The studio is a few minutes walk away from West Drayton Overground Station (trains from Paddington and Ealing Broadway). On weekends, free parking is available in the area.
Tutor biography
Soraya Syed
Soraya Syed trained as a calligrapher in Istanbul, Turkey. Since receiving her authorization in 2005, she has been teaching as well as exhibiting her work in the UK and abroad. She has an academic background in Arabic and the History of Islamic Art. In 2001, Soraya completed her MA at The Prince's School of Traditional Arts. She currently works from her studio in Greater London where she resides with her family.
