An introduction to the practice, methods and materials used by calligraphers in the Islamic calligraphy tradition.
Learn how to prepare a own reed pen and sized paper, practise writing the Arabic alphabet and explore the proportional systems that underlie the letters.
By the end of the course, you should have made your own piece, using ink and gold leaf.
This course requires a minimum number of enrolment to run.
Who is this course for?
Suitable for beginners. Knowledge of Arabic is not necessary.

All materials will be provided in class.

Soraya Syed trained as a calligrapher in Istanbul, Turkey. Since receiving her Ijazah (authorization to teach) in 2005, she has been teaching as well as exhibiting her work in the UK and abroad. She has an academic background in Arabic and the History of Islamic Art. In 2001, Soraya completed her MA at The Prince's School of Traditional Arts. She currently works from her studio in Greater London where she resides with her family.
