Letter carving in stone

This course welcomes students with any or no experience of stone-letter carving. It will focus on learning and improving ‘V’ incising – one of the principal techniques in hand carving fine lettering in stone.
York and Portland stone, dummy mallets, chisels, safety specs, masks and other materials will all be provided.
Stout, comfortable footwear should be worn.

Tom Perkins been commissioned to carve stone and design letters for more than 30 years.
He studied calligraphy at Reigate School of Art and Design and then carved lettering with Richard Kindersley, in the mid 1970s.
He teaches widely, in the UK, Europe, Japan and the USA.
A member of Letter Exchange, he is also a fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Society, Temenos Academy, the Royal Society of Arts and the Society of Designer Craftsmen.
