Painting a Head: Egg Tempera & Piero Della Francesca

Participants shall choose a head from a selection of paintings by Piero Della Francesca which they shall work from painting in egg tempera on a gessoed panel.
In this course students shall learn about the method and techniques of egg tempera, included working in layers from dark to light, fine brush work, the dry brush and glazing. Some colour harmony studies from the palette of Piero Della Francesca shall also be explored.
Who is this course for?
All levels of experience and ability welcome.
What should I bring to class?
An artist's notebook, at least A4 size
Winsor and Newton Series 7 Kolinsky sable brush - round, size 3 or similar watercolour brush.Click here to see an example.
Synthetic paint brushes size 1 - 2 fine, and size 5 - 7 flat
Any other fine watercolour brushes you might want to bring
All other materials will be provided.
What days do I attend?
Monday - Friday
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting slightly messy.
Baggy clothing (especially sleeves)
Short sleeve t-shirts (when there is a chance of contact with hazardous materials)
High heels or open toed shoes
Health & Safety
When mixing pigments:
Wear the dusk mask provided by the tutor
These masks are disposable masks and are intended to be used for a day at most
Wear disposable nitrile gloves should be worn
Tutors and students must wash their hands and forearms regularly to avoid cross contamination ie. after mixing pigments before eating, drinking, smoking, using the telephone or going to the toilet.
Food and drink must never be consumed in the basement workshop or studios.

Lily Corbett Gale
Lily Corbett Gale is a painter who studied drawing and painting with the visionary artist Cecil Collins from 1976 until 1989 and continues to teach his methods in life drawing. She also worked as a picture restorer and conservator for many years. She completed her MA at The Prince's School of Traditional Arts in 2002.
