This course will take students through the process of creating an icon in Russo-Byzantine style in liquid tempera technique, which involves the use of natural earth and mineral pigments. Students will be introduced to gilding with genuine 23 ½ carat gold leaf and painting with shell gold. The aim is for students to complete an icon by the end of the course.
Please note that the exact figure to be painted will be specified shortly.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for beginners and experienced iconographers. Returning students may join the course to work either on this or on other icons.
What should I bring?
You will need to bring two brushes with you to class. The tutor recommends L. Cornelissen and Son, Kolinsky Red Sable series 80A, sizes 000 and 3. You can order online, or pop into the Cornelissen shop.
Where will this course take place?
This course will take place in the studio/home of artist Juliette Rich at Hillcrest, Staple, Dartington, Totnes, TQ9 6HR
Driving directions to the studio:
From the A38, take the exit for Buckfastleigh & Totnes onto the A384. The road follows the River Dart, crosses it at Riverford Bridge and continues past The South Devon Steiner School (on the right) and up the hill (past a left turn to Staverton) and down into Dartington. Carry on straight past the Church (on your left) and straight through the roundabout at Dartington Primary School.
Shortly afterward, from the next 'Shops at Dartington' roundabout, go straight over and up Cott Rd and take the first left up Staple Hill. There is limited parking at the top of the hill beside a little green or in Juliette’s drive, which is on the right, just beyond the tall wooden gates of the thatched ‘Crest Cottage’. There’s a sign for Hillcrest at the top of the drive and just walk down the driveway to the blue front door of Juliette’s lovely thatched home.
From Totnes, either take the main road to the Shops at Dartington and continue as above or turn off the A381/Western Bye-pass onto Barracks Hill. Keep going straight on (past the left turn to Sawpit Lane & right turn to Clay Lane on the mini roundabout) until you come to Cott Road and carry on along until the final right turn onto Staple Hill just before the roundabout by the shops at Dartington. Then continue as above.
As the studio is in Juliette's home, she kindly requests that you remove your shoes indoors.
What days do I attend?
Monday - Friday
