Russo-Byzantine Icon Painting: St Anastasia

This course will take students through the process of creating an icon in Russo-Byzantine style in liquid tempera technique, which involves the use of natural earth and mineral pigments. Students will be introduced to gilding with genuine 23 ½ carat gold leaf and painting with shell gold. The aim is for students to complete an icon by the end of the course.
On this course, students will paint the icon of St Anastasia. If you wish to work on a different image, please contact us to discuss the feasibility with your tutor.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for beginners and experienced iconographers. Returning students may join the course to work either on this or on other icons.
What should I bring?
You will need to bring two brushes with you to class. The tutor recommends L. Cornelissen and Son, Kolinsky Red Sable series 80A, sizes 000 and 3. You can order online, or pop into the Cornelissen shop.

Dr Irina Bradley
Dr Irina Bradley is an alumna of The Prince's School of Traditional Arts in London where she was awarded a PhD for her thesis Spiritual Striving in Icon Painting with a focus on the image of St George and the dragon. Irina is an iconographer who follows the traditional way of icon painting which is regarded as a contemplative practice.
Irina is a visiting tutor for icon painting at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts in London, where she teaches at MA level. Irina’s work is in churches, places of private worship and collections worldwide. Irina has exhibited at several international exhibitions and has presented her research and icons at Christ Church, Oxford, the Temenos Academy, Boghossian Foundation, Villa Empain, Brussels and the V&A.
