Immerse yourself in the vivid colours, wondrous landscapes and anthropomorphic forms in Savafid miniature paintings. Explore Mughal and Chinese influences that synthesised along the Silk Road.
Five courses will look at different elements – Earth, Air, Water, Fire and Ether.
This first course, Earth, will focus on rocks – alive, animated and dynamic.
The following three courses will explore clouds; lakes, rivers and seas; the fiery dragon, phoenix and simurgh, and finally the supernatural: angels, divs and demons.
What should I bring?
Handmade brushes for painting in this style can be purchased from the tutor online or during the course.
Alternatively, you may bring your own brushes that you currently use.
A palette with wells is also highly recommended, as you can take home some pigment to continue working after the course is complete.

Vaishali Prazmari is an artist who incorporates Persian, Mughal Indian and Chinese elements into her work. Vaishali holds degrees from both the Slade School of Fine Art and the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts and holds an MA in Medieval and Renaissance Studies (UCL) specializing in floating islands. She studied Persian and Indian miniature painting during her MA at PSTA and Chinese painting under a master in Hong Kong. Born in London, she has lived on an island in Hong Kong, Paris, and currently lives and works in London. She is now working on an epic project involving painting the 1001 Arabian Nights.
