Get set alight by vivid colours, fierce flames and anthropomorphic forms in Safavid miniature paintings. Enjoy exploring Mughal and Chinese influences that synthesised in great art along the Silk Road.

The Dragon, Phoenix and Simurgh are all creatures of fire and are related along the Silk Road. Dragons are positive, happy and benign symbols of power and the Emperor in Chinese and Central Asian art but in Persian and Indo-European art they are negative symbols of misdemeanour.

Sometimes these two meanings cross over due to cultural influence and exchange. Dazzling dragons, heads of fire and angels’ wings! The Phoenix and Simurgh are related to fire too (being born of fire). Their tails and bodies are wild and bright and curve like spiralling forms.

This course is an opportunity to really play with colours, allowing your imagination to run free, choosing a Dragon, Phoenix or Simurgh to be the star of the show. Participants will produce one of these painted creatures and this course will also contain a gilding component.
