The art of painting on stained glass

On this course, students will learn to paint and shade on glass using oxide pigments. Mix vitreous pigments, stains, and enamels to achieve colour for glazing and firing.
Using imagery provided by the tutor for your inspiration, you will learn to create glass pieces using painting techniques, coloured vitreous powders, use stencils, fine line enamels and decorative inclusions.
This course is both intensive and rewarding with wonderful results. It gives you the knowledge and ability to make a unique artwork.
Scheme of work:
- design and sketching the vidimus/template
- cutting glass to the template
- Mixing mineral pigments to a paste
- Traceline painting
- First firing
- Shading techniques for tonality
- Second firing
- Colour enamel and stains
- Third firing
- Finishing the piece with leading and cementing
About the image: In this stained glass panel, the Queen of Heaven is shown, outshining the transitory and evanescent nature of all other realms, just as the sun dissipates the light of the moon. Painted by the Circle of the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, the figure is painted in a soft and delicate manner and is an excellent example of what can be achieved on glass.

Genista Dunham is a 2015 graduate of The Prince's School of Traditional Arts and comes from a fine art background having studied at the Slade. She is interested in both Christian and Pagan themes, the strongest aspect being allegorical stories. She is interested in transformation from matter to spirit using images of the natural world: flora, fauna and particularly birds. In her work, in ceramics and glass, she has experimented relentlessly with painting techniques and explorations of surface treatments.
